Happy Hour Museum

Looking for something different to do in the city on a Friday night? I'm sure you want the best of both worlds; culture and cocktails. Look no further go to the Rubin Museum of Art: Art of the Himalayas! They offer two for one cocktails and free admission into the museum on Friday night. I was there recently for happy hour. We had tapas and cocktails, caught up on gossip, then took the elevator to the top floor and descended our way through the extensive collection of religious art down the six story spiral staircase.

Also, do not miss the museum shop. They have a great collection of jewelry, buddha's, books, scarves, and soaps - just to name some of the items.

Rubin Museum of Art is open free of charge from 6 - 10 pm
Happy Hour is 6 - 7 pm
150 W 17th St
Between 6th and 7th avenues

Gallow Green above Sleep No More

I couldn't resist immediately making a reservation for Gallow Green the day after receiving the invitation above from the McKittrick Hotel. I opted for 8pm on Friday night. Upon walking into the rooftop bar it felt like walking into a secret garden where the hostessess have names such as Firefly and Clover and the mixologists and staff all have a 1930's 1940's vibe to them. A DJ plays a mix of lounge-y relaxed music. It is a really pretty and romantic place; great for a date. Making a reservation requires a $20 advance purchase and is applied towards your tab. Drinks are priced at about $14 each. The house cocktail list includes "Damned Spot" and "Third Degree". They also offer a variety of punches for 2, 4, and 6 people. Click here to view pictures of Gallow Green. Located at 542 West 27th Street between 10th and 11th Avenues.

The Highline

Have you been to the Highline yet? If not; make the time and get over there.  Since the Highline reopened as a park in 2009 it has become a major tourist attraction and with good reason. First of all it is a great concept: make something beautiful and unexpected (public park with lovely greenery) out of something ugly (decrepit train tracks). Second, the Highline has added much needed green-space to an area which never would have gotten it without the innovative design. And third, it is a great place to people watch and photograph!

This is a live photo stream with the #highline hashtag from Instagram:

The Highline has also partnered up with chefs and restauranteurs that create food that is thoughtful, creative, and interesting and it is offered right on the Highline. Click here to see the current partners.

The last few times I went to the Highline I had lunch at Artichoke Basille's Pizza. They have a delicious, can you guess? artichoke pizza! It is conveniently located across the street from the West 18th Street entrance. After you eat the pizza you walk off the extra calories.

The Highline is open daily from 7am to 11pm
It is wheelchair accessible

Sleep No More

I was lucky enough to get tickets to Sleep No More for my birthday.  Thanks Roxanne!  We went to see the show last week.  I should say we participated in this show last week...
Sleep No More is a loose adaptation on Macbeth which takes place at the McKittrick Hotel in Chelsea, NYC.  Upon arrival you are advised to check your "luggage" and to proceed to check in.   You are then given a playing card (I received a Joker) and directed to the bar/lounge where your card will be called.  By the time I got to the bar I was feeling a little nervous considering I had no idea what to expect and the rooms so far were so dark and eeire.  I walked over to the bar and immediately ordered shots of tequila for my friend and myself.  As soon as I downed it Jokers were called.  None of my friends held that card and so I was on my own.
I lined up with the other Jokers, received a mask, put it on, heard more instruction on how the play worked and what to do in case of "freaking out".  After a very short elevator ride we were let out to explore.  I'm not sure how many rooms I went into that night but later I read that there are over 100 rooms - all of which are intricately designed.  You are allowed to open doors, drawers, read letters, look into closets, play with any and all props, and of course you will run into the dancers and see some action.
I loved being anonymous.  I was able to be as nosey as I wanted and no one knew who I was.  During my two hours of wandering around I ran into my friends a few times but I liked being on my own much more.  It was so much easier to linger or move on when I wanted instead of checking in.
You have to see Sleep No More for yourself.  No review I have read has done it comlete justice.  Get tickets you will not be disappointed.  The only bad thing is the show is coming to an end on November 5th and many of the time slots are already sold out.  Get your tickets now!
